McHargue Cemetery Restored!

McHargue Cemetery Re-dedication ceremony

The McHargue Cemetery located northeast of Salisbury was recently restored and rededicated in May of 2014.

The oldest known burial is that of Sarah McHargue who died in 1835 at the age of 19.  She was the daughter of John and Mary Millsaps McHargue.   John was born in Rowan County, North Carolina in 1780 and married Mary Millsaps in 1803 in Iredell, North Carolina.  They moved to Whitely, Kentucky and on to Chariton County before 1830 when they are found in the Federal Census for Chariton County.  On September 28, 1838, John McHargue was appointed postmaster of the McHargue Community where he had purchased 142 acres in the NW1/4 of Sec. 30 T-54- Range 16 in October of 1831.  John passed away in September 1844 and the Post Office was discontinued in early 1845.

 

John and Mary had the following children:

 

            William 1804 - 1875 Oregon;   Sina 1808 - 1844 CC (Chariton County);  Vina 1810 - 1885 CC - married Jesse Cornelius Rodgers;   John 1812 - 1888 Grundy Co., MO;   Joseph 1812 - 1853 CC - married Elizabeth S. Kitchen (sister of Thomas & Gilliam C);   Sarah 1815 - 1835 CC;   Mary 1820 - 1845 CC - married Thomas Kitchen;   James John 1822 - 1897 Oregon;  Malinda 1825 - 1847 CC - married Gilliam Kitchen - Malinda died about 3 weeks after childbirth;  Matilda 1829 - 1901 Oregon; Frances 1830 - 1914 CC.
